If you have ever stood in front of a shelf of small bottles and wondered what separates them, you are asking the right question. Korean skincare uses a handful of names for the layers that go on between cleanser and moisturizer, and some of those names mean the same thing. Here is what each label means, in the order it goes on.

Skin and softener: two names for toner
In Korea, toner is often called "skin," short for skin toner. Many brands also label it "softener." All three names describe the same step: the first layer after cleansing.
A softener usually leans hydrating, and some have a soft, milky texture rather than a watery one. Pat it in with your palms or sweep it on with a cotton pad. You only need one product in this step, whatever the label says. For more on this step, see The Skincare Lab, Episode 4: Toners and Toner Pads.
The ABOUT ME Rice Makgeolli Skin Softener is a milky, rice-based softener, a good example of how this step can double as a first layer of moisture.

Essence
An essence is a thin, watery layer that goes on right after toner. Its main job is hydration, and it prepares skin so the products that follow spread and absorb more evenly. Many Korean essences are built around fermented ingredients, such as galactomyces or rice ferment, though not all of them are.
Press an essence into the skin with your palms rather than swiping it on with a cotton pad. If your skin tends to feel tight by midafternoon, an essence is often the step that makes the difference. The TRTR Rosemary Pure Essence Premium is a good example of the watery, easy-layering texture to look for.

Serum
A serum is the working step of most routines. It is a little thicker than an essence and is usually built around one or two concerns: dullness, dryness, uneven-looking tone, or skin that looks less bouncy than it used to. Serums are designed for daily use, morning, evening, or both.
If you add only one step to a simple cleanse, tone, moisturize, and sunscreen routine, make it a serum chosen for your main concern. For skin that feels dry, the MEDIHEAL Hyaluronate Hydrate Dewy Serum is an easy place to start. If dullness is the bigger concern, the MEDIHEAL Vitamin C Brightening Serum fits the same step.

Ampoule
An ampoule is the most concentrated of the group. It often comes in a smaller bottle with a dropper, and it carries a higher amount of its key ingredients. Traditionally, an ampoule is something you use for a stretch of time rather than forever: through a change of season, after travel, or in the weeks before an event.
Some brands now design ampoules for everyday use, so check the directions on the box. When an ampoule and a serum address the same concern, you usually need only one of them. The REJURAN Turnover Ampoule is a lightweight PDRN ampoule for skin that looks tired or dull.

Where sheet masks fit
Most Korean sheet masks are soaked in a serum, essence, or ampoule, so a sheet mask is really one of these steps in a different format. The label tells you which kind of formula is in the sheet. An "essence mask" is usually lighter and focused on hydration, while an "ampoule mask" carries a more concentrated formula.
On nights you use one, the mask can stand in for your essence, serum, or ampoule step. Cleanse, tone, apply the mask for the time on the package, pat in what remains, then follow with moisturizer. The MEDIHEAL N.M.F. Ampoule Mask is a hydrating ampoule mask that fits right into this step. For skin that feels sensitive, the ANUA Heartleaf 80 Moisture Soothing Ampoule Mask is a calming option.

The order to layer them
The rule is thinnest to thickest, so each layer can settle before the next one goes on. For the full routine, see the correct order for your Korean skincare routine.
- Cleanser
- Toner, whether it is labeled skin, softener, or toner
- Essence
- Serum or ampoule, thinner one first
- Eye cream, if you use one
- Moisturizer, whether that is an emulsion, a cream, or both
- Sunscreen in the morning
Give each layer about 30 seconds to settle. There is no need to wait longer than that.
Build your routine: do you need all of them?
Most people do not. Start with one toner, whatever it is called, then add the steps that match your skin.
- If your skin feels dry or tight: the ABOUT ME Rice Makgeolli Skin Softener, the TRTR Rosemary Pure Essence Premium, and the MEDIHEAL Hyaluronate Hydrate Dewy Serum.
- If dullness is your main concern: the ABOUT ME Rice Makgeolli Skin Softener and the MEDIHEAL Vitamin C Brightening Serum.
- If you want a short-term boost: add the REJURAN Turnover Ampoule for a few weeks, then return to your usual routine.
- If you prefer a minimal routine: the SMIM Daily Barrier Trio from THE FACE SHOP, a toner, serum, and emulsion designed to be used together.
One thing to watch is repetition. If your essence, serum, and ampoule all feature the same ingredient, you are layering the same idea three times rather than getting three benefits. Choose products that do different jobs.

A note on names
None of these labels are regulated categories. Brands use them loosely, and one brand's essence can behave like another brand's toner or serum. You may also see "emulsion" or "lotion" on a Korean label. Both usually mean a light, milky moisturizer that goes on after serum, not a body lotion.
The texture and the ingredient list tell you more than the name does. Look at how thick the formula is and which ingredients appear near the top of the list.
Frequently asked questions
Is "skin" the same as toner?
Yes. In Korean skincare, "skin" is a common name for toner. It goes on right after cleansing.
What is a softener?
A softener is a hydrating toner. It goes on right after cleansing, before essence. If you already use a toner, you do not need a separate softener.
What is an emulsion?
An emulsion is a light, milky moisturizer. It goes on after serum or ampoule, as your moisturizer step. If creams feel too heavy, an emulsion is a lighter option, and drier skin can layer a cream on top.
Is an essence the same as a toner?
They are close cousins. A toner is the first layer after cleansing and is often very light. An essence usually carries more hydrating ingredients. If your toner already leaves your skin feeling comfortable, you may not need a separate essence.
Do I apply essence before or after serum?
Before. Essence is thinner, so it goes on first, right after toner.
Can I use an ampoule every day?
Many are designed for daily use over a set period, such as two to four weeks. Follow the directions on the box.
Can I use two serums at once?
Yes. Apply the thinner one first and keep it to two, so each has room to do its job.
Do I need a serum or essence on nights I use a sheet mask?
No. The mask covers that step. Cleanse, tone, mask, then moisturize.
How long should I wait between layers?
About 30 seconds, or until the layer no longer feels wet.
